TANK CLEANING CHEMICAL – SEACLEAN

(For oil-contaminated tanks and bilge/sludge areas)

1. Applications

SEACLEAN is designed for cleaning and gas-freeing oil-contaminated cargo tanks, double bottom tanks, deep tanks, and bilge areas.

It can be used neat or diluted with water and is compatible with most tank coatings.

Applicable cleaning methods include:

  • Machine cleaning (fixed/portable tank cleaning machines – e.g. Butterworth)

  • Manual spraying

  • Recirculation / Rock & Roll method

Properties:

  • Appearance: Pale yellow, amber, or dark brown liquid

  • Corrosivity: Non-corrosive to metals; slight effect on rubber

  • Specific Gravity: 0.85–0.90 at 20°C

  • Flash Point: >63°C

  • IMO Class: 9 / III

  • UN Number: 3082

  • ADR: 9.11c

2. Directions for Use

2.1 Cleaning & Gas-Freeing of Double Bottom / Deep Tanks at Sea (Rock & Roll Method)

  1. Remove all possible fuel residues. Heating and vessel trimming are recommended to enhance removal.

  2. Flush tanks with heated seawater, continuously draining. Ensure all tank valves are properly closed.

  3. After draining, add initial SEACLEAN dosage: 10–20 liters per 1,000 liters tank capacity. Fill with seawater to 25% capacity, heat up to max. 60°C (if possible), and maintain for 24 hours.

  4. Continue filling to 95% capacity, maintain heating (max. 60°C), and hold for 48–72 hours.

  5. For rinsing: Fill to 50% capacity with seawater, hold for 2 hours, then drain.

  6. Continue flushing with seawater for 2 hours.

  7. Add second SEACLEAN dosage: 10–15 liters per 1,000 liters tank capacity. Fill to 90–95% capacity, heat (max. 60°C), maintain 48–72 hours.

  8. For gas-freeing: Fill tanks via sounding pipe or vent line. Vessel movement improves cleaning efficiency.

  9. Final flushing with seawater for 2 hours.

  10. Check tank atmosphere using gas detection equipment. Avoid recontamination when ballasting via fire lines.

2.2 Cargo Tank Cleaning by Tank Cleaning Machines

Apply SEACLEAN using fixed or portable tank cleaning machines (e.g. Butterworth type).

  • Recommended concentration: 2 liters SEACLEAN per 1,000 liters water

  • Solution may be prepared in a mixing tank or injected via dosing pump

  • Continuous drainage during washing is recommended

2.3 Cleaning Ship Areas / Pump Room (Rock & Roll Method)

Dosage: 1–2 liters per 1,000 liters water, depending on contamination

  1. Calculate required water volume to cover all areas

  2. Determine required SEACLEAN dosage

  3. Apply SEACLEAN to surfaces, then fill with water

  4. Vessel motion ensures agitation; allow minimum 24 hours

  5. Drain and repeat if necessary

2.4 Optimal Method

Prepare solution in a cargo tank near the pump room.

  • Concentration: 10–20 liters per 1,000 liters water

  • One solution batch typically serves up to three tanks, then must be renewed

  • After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with seawater or fresh water

2.5 Manual Spraying Method

Apply undiluted SEACLEAN to bulkheads, frames, stiffeners, etc. using a spray gun.

  • Allow adequate reaction time

  • Rinse using water or tank cleaning machines

  • For spot cleaning, manual application with hose rinsing is effective

Note: Tanks must be gas-freed prior to entry when applying these methods.
