Among the lifebuoys listed in the table above, at least two must be equipped with a lifeline, with one lifebuoy placed on each side of the ship.
Lifebuoys with lifelines are typically positioned in lower areas: on the main deck, forecastle deck, poop deck, and near gangways. These lifebuoys must not be fitted with self-igniting lights or buoyant smoke signals.
At least half of the lifebuoys specified in the table must be fitted with self-igniting lights. Lifebuoys with lights are generally placed in lower positions and on accommodation decks. The number of lifebuoys with lights must be evenly distributed on both sides of the ship. Lifebuoys fitted with self-igniting lights must not be equipped with lifelines.
Of the lifebuoys fitted with self-igniting lights, at least two must be equipped with self-activating buoyant smoke signals, and these must be capable of quick release from the bridge, with one lifebuoy placed on each side of the ship. The buoyant smoke signals must automatically activate upon contact with water. The smoke must be easily distinguishable (orange in color) and emitted consistently for at least 15 minutes. The smoke signal must be capable of remaining above water and continue to emit smoke even if fully submerged for up to 10 seconds. Lifebuoys with self-igniting lights and smoke signals must be positioned on both sides of the bridge wing.
During inspections, the surveyor must confirm that the ship is equipped with the required number of approved lifebuoys, that they are in satisfactory condition, and that they are positioned in accordance with regulations. The lifebuoys must display the ship’s name and port of registry, and their accompanying components, such as lifelines, retro-reflective tape, self-igniting lights, and smoke signals, must be checked. The self-igniting lights must be tested for functionality, and the expiration date of the smoke signals must be verified.
The surveyor must also confirm that the storage arrangements for the lifebuoys are in good condition and that the lifebuoys can be quickly retrieved from their storage positions for immediate use. The quick-release mechanisms for the lifebuoys fitted with self-igniting lights and buoyant smoke signals must also be checked from the bridge deck.
